However, many of the naturally occurring associations are probably transient and are unlikely to be on an advancing tract toward stable long-term endosymbioses and/or fully integrated plastids. Sorting out which groups are more stable, and which individuals and/or groups are in the process of adapting to environmental conditions, are challenges for which the present concepts have become inadequate.
